When I saw this flick I wanted to grow a 2-foot-afro and tan to turn my dark brown skin stone black. A Girl Like Me is infuriating, which is why it has become all the talk on youtube.com and mediathatmattersfest.org. It shows how racism creates beauty taboos out of natural black beauty.

The mess hits the fan when Kiri Davis, 17, who produced the documentary, conducts an experiment and finds that young black children prefer white dolls over black dolls because the kids believe they are nicer and prettier. This film is a wake-up call: watch it now while I sit around and wait for my nappy hair to grow….
