Happy LovingDay Folks!!!

June 12 is a holiday for some of us who are celebrating the 1967 Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia that legalized interracial marriage. Ken Tanabe, founder of the LovingDay organization set out to make this a national holiday, wrote more about it here.

In honor, RaceWire wants to read your stories about interracial love and hear your take on how race played a role in defining your experiences.

So leave a note. Leave some Love.

My mom is black, my dad is a white Jew. They are hopelessly, disgustingly in love after forty years of marriage.

They'd be adorable if they weren't my parents.

Of course, I agree that legal restrictions blocking interracial couples from getting married were ludicrous and rightfully repealed. But I have to admit, this "Loving Day" business just rubs me the wrong way.

Here's why: it seems like it's trying to erase the taboo on interracial love without also interrogating the ways that race deeply affects our desires in complicated and sometimes ugly ways. I mean, I know plenty of perfectly lovely and loving interracial couples; however, I also know a lot of racial fetishists who like Asian ladies because they're "exotic" or Black women because they think them "freaky".

So, ok, Loving Day. But can't it be a day for self-reflection on who and how we love as opposed to a celebration of our right to desire other races? The former is sorely missing and would be a real revolution, in my humble opinion.
