Phoenix Sheriff Sued for Racial Profiling

The ACLU and MALDEF have filed a class action suit against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio who they say illegally targets Latinos in his immigration sweeps.

The attack on the sweeps alleged the officers based some traffic stops on the race of Hispanics who were in vehicles, had no probable cause to pull them over and made the stops so they could inquire about their immigration status. Allegations about the sweeps were added to a lawsuit, filed in December, that alleges a Mexican man in the country legally was unnecessarily detained by a deputy investigating the man’s immigration status.
