Jobless Claims on the Rise
By the end of the week of July 19th, jobless claims have risen from 34,000 to 406,000. This is not surprising during this turbulent economic period. The Labor Department suggests that this number will continue to rise consequently leading to less spending and more companies shutting down businesses. International Herald Tribune.

Center for Military Readiness Gives Opinion on Gays
Yesterday, the House Armed Services Committee held a hearing about “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Elaine Donnelly of the Center for Military Readiness was part of this hearing testifying against gays in the military with absurd reasoning. Washington Post.

HIV Travel Ban Overturned
Banning HIV-positive visitors and immigrants has been a policy in the United States since the late 1980’s. However, the Senate has voted for the approval of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) a new $50 billion five year plan to halt the spread of HIV-AIDS in developing countries. This may overturn the policy of HIV-AIDS being the medical condition specifically named in U.S. immigration law as a bar to admission to the country. Washington Post.
