Advancement Project, Coalition Partners Sue State of Michigan Over Unlawful Voter Purging
On September 17, 2008, Advancement Project filed a federal lawsuit in
U.S. District Court in Detroit challenging two statewide voter purge
programs that could potentially disfranchise hundreds of thousands of
Michigan voters in advance of the November 2008 presidential election.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the United States Student
Association (USSA) and the ACLU of Michigan against Michigan Secretary
of State Terri Lynn Land and other state and local election officials.
The ACLU National Voting Rights Project, the ACLU of Michigan, and the
law firm of Pepper Hamilton LLP are serving as co-counsel along with
Advancement Project in the case.
