Racist GOP group depicts Obama with watermelon, ribs

obamabucks.jpg

A San Bernardino County Republican group has distributed a newsletter picturing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on a $10 bill adorned with a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken.

Linking Obama to demeaning racist stereotypes drew denunciations from various GOP officials after the illustration appeared in the October newsletter of the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

Diane Fedele, president of the group, said she had no racist intent.

“I never connected,” she told the newspaper. “It was just food to me. It didn’t mean anything else.”

The Obama campaign declined to comment, saying it does not address such attacks.

If Diane Fedele thinks the combination of watermelon, fried chicken, ribs and Kool-Aid combined with a cartoonish image of an African-American man is "just food ... it didn't mean anything else" then she is either a liar or just too stupid to be allowed to vote. My guess is it's the former - she knows perfectly well what racist propaganda she was spreading. Her daughter, denying that anyone should think these symbols are stereotypes, claims Fedele could not possibly be racist because her husband is Mexican - as if only Anglo-Saxons are racists. I wonder how Fedele's husband would feel if Latino politicians were caricatured with pictures of marijuana plants and cerveza bottles, rice and beans, gardening tools, and old pickup trucks overflowing with people sneaking across a border? Fedele, and her lying husband and daughter, owe a huge apology to many people. If she were any kind of decent person she would offer her mea culpas and vow never to commit such a racist act again.

Kai Bolger has it half right. "she is either a liar or just too stupid to be allowed to vote" ... I contend that she is BOTH a liar AND too stupid to be allowed to vote.

"Just food to me." And we're to believe that she's been living in a cave or under a rock for how long?

After trying to weasel her way out of it, NO apology from her has any meaning whatsoever. Diane Fedele is a racist. Clearly and unambiguously. The worst kind of racist. One who when called on it, can't just honestly admit their prejudice. They turn it back on those pointing it out, as if there's something wrong with them.

Diane Fedele is a disgrace to America, her family, and herself. I feel sorry for her daughter ... it's got to be tough to be from the loins of such a retarded racist.

Seconded. To print something that obviously prejudice, then deny any knowledge of it's intent, is ridiculous. And these are the people running America?

I have a disability, I don't know what Diane Fedele was thinking when she created the "Obama Bucks" I can of course infer that is was negative based on the fact that it was depicting a member of the opposing party, but that is all. As for the foods, I have been eating all of them since I was a young child, that doesn't mean I'm black. Like many other visitors to this site, I object to racism, and I want to comment on something brough up by Kai, the previous poster. Not all rasists are Anglo Saxon. If your mission is truly justice or equality, then why not face some or the racism in the black community against others? If you only pursue cases where your chosen minority is targeted, the likely result is not justice or equality, it is a conflict that will last until one group or the other has ceased to exist. Understand please, I agree that racism against minorities must be stopped, but I am also tired of being discriminated against just because I'm not black.

If this was an accident, this was really perfect coincidence that she was able to pick all the stereotypical foods that blacks like. However I am appalled that the koolaid appears to be a cherry flavor. This is just disgusting bigotry when everyone knows that black people go cuckoo for the grape flavor.

How petty...

Wow... I am a conservative republican and that disgusts me. This is exactly why republicans will lose this time around and rightly so. We need to clean our own house of this kind of ignorance and malice before we can expect to gain the trust of the American people again.

I don't care for Senator Obama because I completely disagree with many of his policies. That being said, I think he will win because it appears to me that he deserves to win based on his performance vs. Senator McCain. I only hope that the American people will hold him to his word and expect him to keep the promises he is making.

Thank you Ms. Fedele for being a complete idiot and further debasing the Republican Party with your presence in the ranks. It is just what we needed at this point in history.

I've heard similar 'side-door' explanations only this morning around the difference between labelling Obama a monkey and Bush a monkey. People fail (or refuse) to understand that the object (food, monkey etc.) is irrelevant compared to the motivation behind the use of the object. If the 'money' had pics of caviar and champagne on it, it would speak to the allegation of Obama's elitism. If it had pork chops it would speak to his alleged adherence to Islam.

It has watermelon etc...so it speaks to his race.

I get the "race connection" of fried chicken, but watermelon and ribs?

Not only is she a liar, she is racist. Maybe we should see if Fedele's husband is in this country legally or do he marry her to become a citizen, he very well may have been her gardener.

The Black people can use derogatory statements about Mr Bush all day long, however, when a negro's favorite food is displayed as a joke whites and blacks alike get up in arms. That my fellow Americans is what's known as a double standard
