The Oakland, California based Akonadi Foundation has launched the Oscar Grant Peace and Racial Justice Fund to support the community organizing, advocacy, and cultural work taking place in response to the killing of Grant, a young Black man who was shot by a white Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer on January 1 as he lay handcuffed on the ground on his stomach.

The Foundation is offering mini-grants up to $500 to support “the immediate demands for justice and institutional change as well as the long-term movement building this situation can shape.”

The Akonadi Foundation is right on the mark in its timely and ongoing initiatives to support racial justice and leadership in communities of color. The first round of applications are due 5 p.m. on Friday, January 23. Visit akonadi.org for more details.
